Left alone, a worn CV joint will eventually tear through its boot, lose grease, and turn a straightforward repair into a more expensive one. Or worse, a vehicle that won’t move.

The most common drivetrain repair on front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive vehicles. When a CV joint is worn or the boot has torn and the joint has run dry, the full axle shaft is typically replaced as an assembly.
If a CV boot tears but the joint itself is still in good condition, replacing just the boot can save the joint. That window is short. Once grease escapes and debris gets in, the joint degrades quickly.
Rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive vehicles use a driveshaft to transfer power from the transmission to the rear axle. Vibration at highway speed, clunking under acceleration, or a shudder at certain speeds can all point to driveshaft problems.
Universal joints connect driveshaft sections and allow for movement as the suspension travels. A worn U-joint typically produces a clunk when shifting from drive to reverse, or a vibration that gets worse at certain speeds.
