Charlie Bockman opened East Side Standard in 1964 with a simple idea: treat people the way you’d want to be treated, do honest work, and stand behind it. That was the whole business plan. It turned out to be enough.
For more than three decades, Charlie built something DeKalb County came to rely on. Not just the repairs. The relationship. A shop where people knew they’d get a straight answer, not a sales pitch. Where the advice was the same whether you were spending two hundred dollars or two thousand.
Jon bought the business from his father on July 1, 1999, and kept everything that mattered. The name. The approach. The belief that a shop that tells you the truth, even when the truth is “it can wait,” is the only kind worth having. Jon has been running Bockman’s that way for more than 25 years.
The business has grown. Two locations. 24 employees. A second location in DeKalb built around commercial and fleet service. NAPA Shop of the Year. Fifteen Readers’ Choice wins. A 4.8-star rating across 750-plus Google reviews. But the thing Charlie started in 1964, the honest approach, the neighbor-over-the-fence communication, the work you can count on, that part hasn’t changed.
A shop is only as good as the people working in it. We have 24 employees between our two locations, and the team we’ve built is one of the things we’re most proud of.
Our people stay. High turnover in auto repair is common. At Bockman’s it’s not. We have technicians and service staff who have been with us for years, some for decades. That continuity matters. The person who worked on your vehicle last time probably remembers it. And probably remembers you.

Sam runs our Sycamore location. He manages the day-to-day at 2158 Oakland Dr, handling consumer and light commercial repair and tire service for Sycamore and the surrounding area.

Greg runs our DeKalb location. He manages the day-to-day at 112 Industrial Dr, our commercial and fleet operation. If you’re a fleet customer or you need something handled on the DeKalb side, Greg is who you’re dealing with.

Cody handles our Safety Lane inspections. The DeKalb location is the only IDOT Safety Lane in DeKalb County, and Cody is the person running those inspections. He knows the process, he knows the requirements, and he’ll tell you straight what passed and what didn’t.
NAPA’s Shop of the Year recognizes one shop from more than 18,000 NAPA Auto Care centers nationwide. It’s not a participation trophy. It’s the top recognition in the NAPA network, based on quality of work, customer satisfaction, and operational excellence. Bockman’s has earned it.
NAPA Gold Certification is a higher tier of the NAPA Auto Care program, recognizing shops that meet elevated standards for training, equipment, and customer service. Not every shop in the network qualifies.
AAA’s Approved designation means we’ve met their standards for facility, technician training, and customer service, and we’ve agreed to AAA’s dispute resolution process if a customer ever has a concern. That accountability is the point.
For 15 years, DeKalb County readers have voted Bockman’s the best auto repair shop in the area. That’s not a marketing campaign. That’s customers voting with their opinions, year after year.
A 4.8-star rating across more than 750 reviews takes real consistency to maintain. We read every review, and we take the ones that aren’t five stars just as seriously as the ones that are.

Not everything that needs attention needs to be done today. We’ll tell you what’s a safety issue, what’s coming due soon, and what can be watched for now. The decision about what to fix is always yours.
Every qualifying repair comes with the NAPA Peace of Mind Warranty: 3 years or 36,000 miles, honored at more than 18,000 NAPA Auto Care locations across the country. If something we fixed fails, you’re covered. Anywhere.
Bockman Bucks gives personal vehicle customers 3% back on every qualifying service dollar, automatically. No sign-up. No punch card. Just a thank-you that shows up when you need it.
Free oil changes on Veterans Day, and a standing 10% discount year-round with a valid military ID or DD-214. If you’ve served, bring your vehicle in.
Every vehicle that comes to Bockman’s gets a Digital Vehicle Inspection. Our team goes through your vehicle systematically and documents what they find, including photos of actual conditions. You get that report before any work is authorized. You see what we see, decide what you want done, and nothing happens until you say so.
Our Sycamore location on Oakland Drive handles personal vehicles and light trucks: the full range of repair and maintenance for the cars and trucks that families and everyday drivers depend on.
Our DeKalb location on Industrial Drive is built around commercial and fleet service: medium-duty trucks, diesel engines, Class 7 vehicles, fleet accounts, RVs and trailers, and the county’s only IDOT Safety Lane. Personal vehicles are welcome there too.
Different capabilities. Same people. Same standards. Same honest approach. Charlie built one thing. It just happens to take two locations to do it all now.
We’re not a chain. We’re not owned by a private equity group. We’re a family business that’s been part of DeKalb County since 1964: the same county where our employees live, where our customers’ kids go to school, where we grab lunch and run into our clients at the grocery store.
That’s not a marketing line. It’s just true. And it’s why the way we treat people matters to us the way it does.
If you’ve been looking for a shop you can count on in DeKalb County, we’d like to earn your business. Call either location, book online, or just stop by. We’ll take good care of you.
